Missing In Action

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for the delay in our updates! We've had a turn of events that has caused us to leave our hotel, and all internet access.
On Monday, we received Grace. She is beautiful, bright-eyed, mellow and very sweet.
She had a fever the day we got her, and the nurse said that she caught a cold on the car ride from the orphanage.
Monday evening we noticed that she was having a terrible time breathing, and her fever continued through the night.

On Tuesday, we took her to the doctor. They said that she had severe bronchitis and she should go to the main Children's hospital. So off we went. It was quite an experience. I won't go into it, but I can say that it was pure chaos. The doctors said that she has pnuemonia, and we should quickly take her to the 'new' children's hospital. We drove another 20 minutes, to the second hospital. We were sent to an Observation Room, which is similar to an ER. We were taken to a small room with 8 beds (7 were filled with children and their families). Grace was starting to turn blue, from her breathing issues. Chest Xrays and blood tests were ordered. Grace was diagnosed with severe pnuemonia, and we were told that we'd have to stay multiple days. Between the translation issues, and their different medical processes, we were confused and completely worried about Grace's situation. At the end of the day, a doctor said that she would like to have Grace sent to the Respiratory Unit and be admitted for several days. Late Tuesday evening, we moved up to our own room on the Respiratory floor.

Chinese hospitals are very different from American hospitals. You purchase and administer your own drugs. The rooms don't have any amenities such as hand soap or toilet paper. It's basic, compared to hospitals that we're used to in the US. But the rooms and facility are clean and efficient. And we have a western toilet in the room (snaps for that)! The nurses and doctors are kind and concerned with Grace's condition. That's what is most important.

She is doing better. Her fever is gone. Thanks to constant IVs and breathing treatments, her situation has improved considerably. We are starting to see more of her personality. A few days ago she was very weak and tired. Now she is in good spirits, alert and playful. She's such a brave little girl!
We're hoping to be released in several days, when the IVs are no longer necessary.
We're anxious for everyone to meet Grace! She's delightful.

I will try to update the blog in a few days. Until then, I wish everyone well! Take care.
